The IRIScan anywhere 2 ($199 direct) is a portable manual sheet-fed scanner with a difference. It scans to memory, which means you can scan now and upload to a computer later. That puts it less in competition with portable sheet-fed scanners like the Editors' Choice Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini that I recently reviewed than with handheld scanners that also scan to memory, like the PlanOn DocuPen Xtreme X05 ($369.99 direct, ), or, for that matter, with simply using a camera.

The anywhere 2 is eminently portable, particularly when you consider that it eliminates the need to lug a computer along with you. It looks much like any other manually fed portable scanner, at 1.7 by 10.6 by 2.3 inches (HWD), and it weighs slightly less than 1 pound. I.R.I.S. missed the obvious extra of including a protective carrying case, but that's a small oversight at worst.
Initial setup for the scanner doesn't even rise to the level of being hard enough to call it trivial. Simply open the box, connect the scanner to a computer with the supplied USB cable, and let the battery charge. There's no scan driver to install, because the scanner doesn't scan to a computer. Instead, in addition to charging when you plug in the USB cable, the anywhere 2 looks like USB memory to the computer, so you can copy the scanned files to your hard drive.
The hardest part of setup is waiting 4 hours for the battery to fully charge, a recharge time that's long enough to be the scanner's one major shortcoming. According to I.R.I.S., the anywhere 2 can scan about 100 letter-size pages on a full charge, which places some obvious limits on how much you can scan without returning to your computer to recharge.
While you're waiting for the batteries to charge for the first time, you can install the software that comes with the scanner: I.R.I.S.'s own CardIRIS Pro 5 business card program, ReadIRIS Pro 12 for IRIScan anywhere 2 for optical character recognition, and ACDSee's ACDSee Pro 3 for editing and printing photos. You're not limited to using these programs, however. Once you've copied the files to your hard drive, you can open them and work with them using any software you like.
Using the anywhere 2
Scanning with the anywhere 2 is as simple as setting it up. Simply stick a photo, sheet of paper, or business card into the input slot in front. The scanner will automatically feed and scan it, and then save the results to a file. The scanner itself includes 512MB of internal memory. If you've plugged in a MicroSD card, however, it will save the file to the card instead. (Note that the scanner comes with a 1GB card.) If you've plugged in a USB memory key also or instead of a MicroSD card, it will save to the USB key.
When you're ready to upload the scanned files to your computer you can simply move the USB key or MicroSD card to the computer, of course, or you can connect the scanner by its USB cable, turn it on, let Windows recognize it, and copy or move the files to your hard disk. One nice touch is that if you leave both a MicroSD card and USB key in the scanner, Windows will recognize both, as well as the internal memory, showing each as a separate drive.
By default, the anywhere 2 saves all of the scans, including black and white text pages, as color JPG files scanned at 300 pixels per inch (ppi). You can't change to black and white or change the file format, but you can switch between 300 and 600 ppi using the same control that serves as a power button. Unfortunately, the instructions for switching are easy to miss, since they're hidden in a footnote in the quick start guide. The good news is that 300 ppi should be more than enough resolution for most scans, making this is a minor issue at worst.
I'd prefer having the choice of scanning black and white documents in black and white to save disk space. But given the ever-growing capacities of hard drives, I don't count this as a serious problem. Similarly, I'd like the option to save documents to PDF format for document management applications, but ReadIRIS Pro makes up for this somewhat by letting you open the files and then save them to either image PDF or searchable PDF format, among other choices.
Results
I usually dismiss sheet-fed scanners out of hand for photos, because the feed rollers tend to leave marks on the originals. However, I.R.I.S. insisted that the scanner was meant for photos, so I tested it with that in mind. I was surprised to find that it managed to feed the photos in my tests without leaving any visible marks, and I give it lots of points for that.
Unfortunately, the scans themselves are relatively low quality. The images in my tests were obviously degraded from the originals even at a quick glance, both as images on screen and when printed with an Epson PictureMate Show. The two key issues were that they were grainier than the originals and showed obvious color shifts, particularly with reds and greens. In addition, photos in landscape orientation with light blue skies showed a lighter band of blue across the sky at the top edge of the picture.
I'd call the quality suitable for sending an e-mail showing what a photo looks like or for reprinting a copy that will spend its life behind a refrigerator magnet or tacked to an office bulletin board. I wouldn't use the scanned photos for anything more demanding than that.
The anywhere 2 (in combination with ReadIRIS Pro) did much better on text recognition, reading both our Times New Roman and Arial test pages at sizes as small as 10 points without a mistake. It also handled the physical scanning of business cards well, but the business-card program had trouble recognizing the text and putting it in the right fields.

On our set of cards that are particularly hard to read, it made three or more mistakes on more than half of the cards. On our set of cards with more conventional layouts and colors, it made at least one mistake on about three quarters of the cards. After putting time in to check the results and make corrections, you'll probably still have saved time compared to typing everything in yourself, but compared with other combinations of scanners and business card programs, the anywhere 2 is well below par.
Ultimately, the anywhere 2 does an acceptable job, but not an impressive one. Compared with conventional portable scanners like the Canon P-150 or the more similarly priced Plustek MobileOffice AD450 ($230 street, ), it saves you the trouble of carrying a computer with you, but it's a lot slower, lacks an automatic document feeder, and offers somewhat limited capability because of its roughly100-page battery life.
Iriscan Anywhere 3 Drivers
On the other hand, compared to other computer-free solutions like the DocuPen Xtreme X05 or a camera, it's far less likely to leave you with a scan that you'll belatedly discover is unusable only after you've gone back to your computer to upload the file and look at it. If you need the freedom of not being tethered to a computer, and don't need to scan more than 100 pages at a time, the anywhere 2 should be somewhere on your list of potential choices.
