FlexNet Publisher License Server Manager is a software program developed by Flexera Software. The most common release is 11.10.1.0, with over 98% of all installations currently using this version. Oct 02, 2012  Hi everyone, I would just like to ask, 'What are the reasons for FLEXnet Publisher to be installed in someone's PC, without the owner of the PC having any knowledge that the software is in there?'.I am aware that in order for my system to work and run at its optimum for my requirements, Microsoft and other software companies would've have had to include software applications that have.

FlexNet Publisher (formerly known as FLEXlm) is a software license manager from Flexera Software which implements license management and is intended to be used in corporate environments to provide floating licenses to multiple end users of computer software.[citation needed]

Computer software can be licensed in a variety of ways. A license to use a piece of software may be associated with a specific machine (node-locked), permitting it to only run on that machine (node in a network); alternatively, a company may buy a pool of floating licenses and these licenses may be allocated dynamically to machines, a license being checked-out when a user begins using the software on any given machine and checked-in when the user finishes using the software. In this way, for example, a company might buy a pool of 50 licenses but support a user community of hundreds of occasional users of the software (so long as no more than 50 users ever want to use the software simultaneously).[original research?]

History[edit]

FLEXlm was originally a joint development by GLOBEtrotter Software and Highland Software in 1988. Highland's rights to the FLEXlm product were acquired by GLOBEtrotter in 1994; Highland continued as a reseller of 3rd party software. GLOBEtrotter was then acquired by Macrovision in 2000. Combining features from the Safecast protection system and FLEXlm, FlexNet featured product activation and executable wrapping, supporting floating licensing and node locked licensing models. Macrovision subsequently renamed FLEXlm to FLEXnet Publisher.[citation needed]

The original FLEXlm development team moved on to develop the Reprise License Manager (RLM) at Reprise Software in 2006.[citation needed]

On 1 April 2008 Macrovision's Software Business Unit, which included FLEXnet Publisher, was sold to the private equity company Thoma Cressey Bravo and subsequently relaunched as Acresso Software. It was a cash transaction valued at approximately $200 million.[2]

In October 2009 Acresso Software announced its name change to Flexera Software and FLEXnet Publisher was changed to FlexNet Publisher.[3]

A July 2011 announcement said that Teachers' Private Capital, the private investment department of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, had agreed to acquire a majority stake in Flexera Software from Thoma Bravo, LLC, a private equity firm.[4]

The product is currently marketed by Flexera Software as FlexNet Publisher.[5]

Issues with bootloaders[edit]

Due to the way the digital rights management (DRM) works in FlexNet Publisher, FlexNet affects bootloaders; this makes FlexNet Publisher incompatible with drives encrypted with TrueCrypt[6][7] and renders Linux-based systems unable to boot.[8][9] The TrueCrypt developers also state that 'the issue is caused by inappropriate design of the third-party activation software.'[10]

Hi everyone, I would just like to ask, 'What are the reasons for FLEXnet Publisher to be installed in someone's PC, without the owner of the PC having any knowledge that the software is in there?'. I am aware that in order for my system to work and run at its optimum for my requirements, Microsoft and other software companies would've have had to include software applications that have nothing to do with my day-to-day use of the programs I have in my PC, but are there act as a form of support to softwares already installed, such as for updating purposes; or as a form of controller or deterrent for incompatible applications.

However, I would like for someone to be able to provide me with some sort of viable explanation or reason as to why my PC would have a FLEXnet Publisher installed in my system? As an average End User of Personal Computers, I mainly use my PC for chatting with family, friends, and members of a Web Network I belong to. Our personal home Network consists of 3x Laptops using the same ISP; and the other 2x PCs are basically used by their respective owner's for similar personal use. In other words, according to what I have briefly read here regarding what FLEXnet Publisher is mainly used for, I am therefore somewhat perplexed as to 'Why there would be a need for it to be insalled in my PC, when from my understanding of it, what I use my PC for and the amount of volume I generate does not really justify the need for me having one?'. 'Is there other types of applications that FLEXnet Pulbisher would be used for, which would perhaps quench my curiousity with satisfaction?' And if so, 'Should it be located in the area I have included below?'

I realise that your department must have to answer myriads of questions, and by the volume, but I would really appreciate it if someone could take the time to respond to my query. If this software application is an unnecessary item in my Hard Drive then I would very much like to unistall it, but as I've discovered the hard way, being 'click happy' with Delete, can lead to all sorts of migraine inducing havoc! Can someone also answer 'Why FLEXnet Publisher has a 'registrations - XML Doc' in the Folder?
